Nazaaray Estate. Delightfully unexpected

This 50-acre former cattle farm has transformed into the southernmost vineyard of the Mornington Peninsula, renowned for its exceptional wines crafted solely from grapes grown onsite.

Paramdeep Ghumman and his late wife Nirmal purchased the estate in 1991, only ten years after emigrating from India. Not knowing what they wanted to do with the land, they settled on making wine. What is unusual in this tale is that Paramdeep had only ever tasted wine once he had a glass of champagne at the age of 30 on the flight he migrated to Australia. At this very moment, Paramdeep discovered his interest in wine, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Nazaaray Estate is best known for its hand-harvesting and small batches of wine—a very intimate and genuine approach to winemaking. Paramdeep meticulously crafts each bottle by hand, focusing on Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. His journey from a newcomer to one of the few Indian winemakers in Australia is a testament to his passion and dedication. The vineyard's cool maritime climate allows for a slow ripening season, producing high-quality fruit that produces exceptional wines for you.

As you enter the estate, you're greeted by two vintage 1930s train carriages, a charming touch added by Nirmal. These carriages, lovingly restored by her, offer a unique setting for your visit. On sunny days, you can bask in the beauty of the vineyard and the nearby Greens Bush from the two cosy decks. The indoor cellar door is a testament to the estate's 33-year journey, which you're invited to be a part of.

Here, the cellar door offers an intimate and personalised experience. You may enjoy a tasting hosted by Paramdeep, who shares his latest releases and their stories. The Estate is a working winery, and although not a restaurant, the on-site kitchen serves up fusion plates of authentic Indian cuisine. Paramdeep brings recipes from his homeland, where spice is celebrated but never too overpowering. He intends to share Indian cuisine that pairs well with the region’s signature cool-climate wines.

Nazaaray Estate is open every weekend between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and all tasting fees are donated to conserving the Bengal tiger, whose numbers have become dangerously low and are bordering on extinction.  Whilst the Estate may be hard to find, the experience and the flavours make your effort to discover worthwhile.
