There’s no feeling quite like it; paddling into the brisk ocean water, surfboard at the ready, gazing onwards to the impending waves which loom in the distance. Exhilarating and electric, it’s not hard to see why so many surfers flock to the Mornington Peninsula’s ocean beaches in search of those gravity-defying swells. Explore more of our top surfing destinations for this summer, and let the adventure begin:
Gunnamatta
With powerful waves offering the best surf breaks on the Mornington Peninsula, Gunnamatta Beach is a 3km stretch of exposed coastline and rugged beauty. It must be noted this beach is very hazardous for swimming, with high waves, rips, rocks and reefs an ongoing occurrence and finding. Stay between the flags and on the bar if you decide to refresh the senses here. Otherwise, head over to one of our adored Port Phillip beaches if desiring a calmer bathing experience.
Portsea
Alongside its panoramic sea views across Bass Strait, Portsea Beach is a popular surfing location in the summertime, receiving the full force of westerly winds. Take a long soothing stroll to visit the iconic London Bridge rock formation, all whilst embracing the everlasting oceanic charm which surrounds. Once again, make sure to stay on the bar and between the flags if wanting to swim here, especially at low tide when the rips intensify.
St Andrews
As part of the Mornington Peninsula National Park, St Andrews Beach faces the wild waters of Bass Strait, with noteworthy breaks attracting surfers year-round. Nestled between two of the region’s most well-known beaches, this destination is a true scenic wonderland - who could ever get bored of those sweeping sea vistas? This beach does experience dangerous rips and is not patrolled, hence swimming is not recommended.
Point Leo
Picturesque in its grandeur and famous for its excellent waves, Pt Leo Beach introduces the ideal location for visitors to enjoy a refreshing seaside stopover, as well as for surfers (both beginners and experienced) to take to the crisp ocean waters. Stay between the flags if swimming here, as the beach does experience strong rips. Looking for an extra adventure? Camping options are also on offer at the neighbouring foreshore reserve.
A Sandcruiser beach wheelchair can be booked for free from the Point Leo Surf Life-Saving Club.
